Documentary research has revealed that a surprisingly large number of Anatolian rugs in Western collections have come from Transylvania. Holbeins, Ottoman court prayer rugs, Lottos, white-ground Ushaks, and other ‘Transylvanians’ had found their way into private or museum collections in Hungary, Austria, Swizerland, Italy, Germany, and the UK. What about ‘Transylvanian’ rugs in American collections assembled in the early 20th century? Stefano Ionescu’s talk reviews these carpets, and where and how he suspects that they came via Transylvania.
